Can one person be both my doula and birth photographer?
Yes! I get this question a lot.
“How can you do both?”
And my answer is simple… I’ve been doing this for a long time.
My cameras have become an extension of me. They hang from my body, ready when a moment unfolds, and they wait patiently on bedside tables while I squeeze hips, apply counter pressure, adjust a peanut ball, or help someone find a position that feels more comfortable.
The transition between supporting and documenting is not a dramatic shift. It’s not stepping out of one role and into another. It’s a natural rhythm that I’ve developed over years of attending births.
Taking a step back to photograph a moment is no different than stepping away to take a sip of water, check in with a partner, or make space for a family to connect. I am still present. I am still paying attention. I am still holding the room.
The difference is that sometimes I hold the moment with my hands, and sometimes I hold it with my camera.
Because of my experience as both a doula and a photographer, I understand the delicate balance of birth spaces. I know when to move closer and when to disappear. I know when a moment needs support and when it simply needs to be witnessed.
My priority will always be you—your comfort, your autonomy, your experience. The photographs are the gift that comes from being fully present alongside you.
