I tiptoed into the hallway to load my cameras with film and I could hear the low moaning coming from the primary bathroom. I knew she was close. A few moments of photographing her with her husband and midwives as she labored in the bathtub and then there was a baby! So quick. So calm. So peaceful. So triumphant!
She used her husband’s strength to get out of the tub, suddenly without much of her own… after all of that! As she moved to the bed, her midwives supporting her as she supported her new babe. That walk to the bed is a favorite sight of mine as a birth witness. To see the determination even on wobbly legs. The strength to carry not only her tired self but the most precious thing she’s ever held… all new and squishy. The release when she settles into the bed. There’s not much like it!
I’m thrilled to be offering birth photography on 35mm and polaroid film these days. I’ve missed being in the birth space as a doula and photographer. And film has a way of capturing the essence of the birthing atmosphere and experience so well. It’s a mix of luck and magic and skill and acceptance in the end. That what we were able to make together on one of the most pivotal days of your life is worthy of being enough.
If you’re pregnant and curious about birth photography in the DMV area, reach out. I’d love to connect and see if this kind of magic is right for your upcoming experience. I offer a limited number of birth photography/doula spots in my calendar so don’t hesitate to get in touch!
